Eyes Wide Shut

After ten long years
Some of us still
Nurse our broken hearts
Over the pain inflicted
Upon us on that historical day

They said that it changed the world
But I say that it only empowered
Those who shrouded us in darkness
And hardened the hearts
Of those who dare not seek the truth

It's unpatriotic, they said
It's insensitive and disrespectful
To those who lost loved ones, they said
But nothing is more so than to allow
So many questions to remain unanswered

We’ve been called conspiracy theorists
Simply because we cannot and will not
Accept the unsatisfactory explanation given
But we have always known that shadows loom large
And lies stand upon feeble legs

Many of us found comfort in consensus reality
While others would not rest until the truth was known
Of course, the path of least resistance prevailed
And it was reinforced by the repetitious jingoism
Bombarding our collective unconsciousness everyday

Never forget was the mantra
But how could we forget
When those images were emblazoned
On our brains and the suffering that we inflicted
Upon innocent people continues to this day

We became much of what they had said
We were fighting against
We were turned into bloodthirsty savages
And in our self-congratulatory revenge-seeking
The devil crept in and glued our eyes wide shut

 And now, the problem remains,
How will we find our way home?
Because along with our blindness,
The crows have eaten our breadcrumb trails
And we fight amongst ourselves

No, the world didn’t change on that day
We are just children on a seesaw;
The truth has been weighted in the down position
And the only thing that we forgot
Is what truth looks like

And while they fester in their anger
And foment hatred for their scapegoat
We won’t stop asking questions
And opening bewildered eyes
Because compromise on the truth… is just another lie

Garden of Secrets

In your garden of secrets,
I bathed in a pond of sins
Where water’s murmur lured me into
The anarchy of remembering
All of passion’s promises
That lay buried beneath your fertile soil

As redwood trees sprang up,
You climbed them and sought shelter
From the harsh light of knowing
That many tears had watered their roots
And forgotten lover’s wicked whispers
Had blown through their leaves
Like shimmering tambourines

Fountains of pearls rained down
Upon the scarlet canopy,
And rivers of ecstasy
Flowed through the landscape
Of thought’s paradise

Mingling among love’s crimson roses,
And lust’s night-blooming jasmine,
Echoes of siren’s songs floated like
Butterflies on a tailwind,
And the dreams of innocent children
Grew like cobalt morning glory
Entwining and flowering on rock walls
Covered in lush layers of deep forest green

It was there that I discovered
The treasures of your heart
They were revealed in your cries
For I heard them call to me,
Like ancient voices rising up
From the bursting bubbles
Surfacing on the river of time
Each one piercing my heart
Like darts thrown from an unseen hand
And landing squarely on their mark

As I wandered through a forest of whispering trees,
I heard your snickers, sobs and moans
They led me to an imaginarium
Where I slipped into your dream’s stronghold
Only to find that it had been plundered
By the barbarians who had been enticed
By the hope of stealing your reluctant stories

So I left empty-handed, feeling like a fool
But hoping that one day, you’d ask me to return,
And that perhaps you’d even invite me in,
Press your lips to my ear and confess
All of your tales of Symphonia
